Hardiness Zones
Informations

The system of Hardiness-Zones was introduced by the US Department of Agriculture. But meanwhile it is common all over the word, including Germany and their neighbour-countries. The Hardiness-Zone define the expected minimum winter temperatures, that effects the survival of gardenplants.

If temperatures of minus 15 °C occur regularly in a specific region, then you are living in a Zone-7-Area. The coldest Zone is Zone 1 in arctic regions, the warmest Zone is Zone 12, significating equatorial tropics. Each Zone covers a range of 5,5 degrees Centigrade, which is identical to a range of 10 degrees Fahrenheit. For each plant, listed on our homepage, you'll find a declaration, to which Zone a plant is classified. Of maximum interest is in each case the lowest Zone mentioned, because it defines, if the species survives an average winter planted outside in your garden or not. On the other hand, most plants can stand and will tolerate higher winter temperatures without problems. Only some will fail to produce flowers or fruits.
