Winter temp. |

What does the Average-Temperature-in-Winter mean? The first number of this specification gives you an idea of the OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE throughout the winter. The second declaration refers to the TEMPERATURE TOLERANCE of each species. If the first number for example mentions 10 °C, the second numbers say (+/- 5 °C), this means, that you can add oder subtract 5 °C to 10 °C. Conclusion: This plant can be placed between 5 (10°C - 5°C) and 15°C (10°C + 5°C) during winter time. We introduced this system, because some of our plants are very adaptable to a wide range of temperatures, e.g. the Strelitzia. Bird-of-Paradises can hibernate at 0 °C as well as at 20 °C. Other species are not that tolerant and want to be hatched within e.g. 8 °C to 12 °C. For the optimum temperature it is not decisive, if some days of the month the room is warmer, e.g. in wintergardens, that are used for celebrations and heated up for guests. Because the earth in the pots warms up more slowly than the air, one or two days of higher heating don't interrupt the hibernation.
Does a patio-plant need light in winter or not? Generally no plant can survive without light - this is nature's law. But some plants tolerate a lower light-intensity during a specific period of the year than others. Their main strategy is hibernation without leaves. In our sortiment, you'll find a list of species, that survive in comperatively dark rooms during winter time, if they are cool (0-10 °C) enough. Nevertheless: A small window is even for these plants the minimum you should provide to ventilate regularly. If the room is warm and dark, most plants get in trouble, because they try to sprout. Thin, pale leaves and long, slim branches are the result, that don't fit the wish to have an attractive, bushy plant. Therefore we can post the rule: The warmer a room with hibernating potplants is, the more light is needed. The cooler a place is, the darker it may be. In spring, when the plants start to sprout, all of them should move to a window-place, so that their new leave can develop healthyly. Remember: Glasses diminish the amount of light, that is usable for the plants (assimiliation), by up to 60 percent. Each meter more distance from the window, halfens the amount of light: 3 m away from the window, the light counts in the worst case only 5 Prozent of outside! For many plants, this is too less to survive and too much to die. We recommend: Try to give every potplant the lightest place you have. Here it will develop best, flower early next year and will bear fruits, that surely ripe during the season. |
