Mango fruits increasingly establish in our kitchens as dessert, chutney or essential ingredient of many Asian dishes. However, not only for hobby- or professional cooks harvesting your own Mango fruits can therefore be interisting. Watching the maturation of these exotic fruits at home can be an exiting event for the whole family. Fragrant flowers mostly in (early) summerprecede the harvest. They stand as panicles on red shafts at the end of the branches. The petals have white, pink and yellow portions. They are pollinated by insects. Every Mango tree bears both hermaphroditic and pure male flowers, so that fructiification is assured and even improved with a second plant. In this country, the fruits can reach 200 to 400 grammes, in the tropics 1000 g are possible. When the fruit is ripe the peel is partially yellow or reddish. The maturation takes four to five months. In case of grafted Mango trees -as we cultivate- the harvest starts already 2 or 3 years after grafting. Already as a young tree they grow in a well branched habit and look attractive with their oblong, evergreen leaves. Young leaves are reddish- orange and provide additional colour spots.
