Morus nigra - Black Mulberry

Many of you might still remember Black Mulberry trees from the (grand-) parents’ garden. Just 60 years ago they were as common in gardens as quince or pear trees. After World War II these robust fruit trees with their multiform, rough-textured leaves vanished gradually and were soon forgotten. But now they are rediscovered, because these robust, uncomplicated trees free of vermin can be planted in garden an tolerate the cold of an average winter without any problem. The yellow flowers appear in May and June and look like willow catkins. Only 6 to 8 weeks later they are followed by ripe, black fruits. The flowers are separated into male and female catkins that open at the same time. The female flowers are pollinated by wind- only one plant is therefore necessary for a rich harvest every year. The harvest goes on for weeks during which one can best enjoy the small delicacies directly from the tree. They are very similar to blackberries but taste sweet und fruity without a bitter aftertaste. It is almost impossible to eat them undetected: Black Mulberries leave a clearly visible trace of colour that can nevertheless be washed off easily. The Black Mulberry is the smallest of three sisters (Morus alba, Morus rubra) and also has the smallest leaves. It reaches a size of 6m on average and therefore fits into any front garden or orchard, especially since it is easy to keep the naturally well-branched treetop in shape by regular trimming in March. Alternatively, you can keep Black Mulberry for many years in a container during a long outdoor season from March to November. The leaves drop down in autumn and the trees can then easily be wintered in an unheated, dark place (garage, summer house, small greenhouse, barn, storage, etc.).

Quality: tasty fruits from own crop; long harvest time; attractive leaves; robust & easy to care; hardy when planted in the garden; easy to winter as potted plant
Use: planted in the garden; in pots starting from March/ April to October/ November outside on balcony, terrace or in the garden - during winter in a room; all year round in an unheated greenhouse
