Poncirus trifoliata (Citrus) - Trifoliate Orange

Trifoliat Orange (Poncirus trifoliata) is native to the Himalayas (central China). That’s where it got its winter hardiness from, which makes it the only citrus plant suitable for being planted in the garden in Northern Europe. Young Trifoliate Oranges grow quickly, later modestly. They branch off well, which can be even improved by cutting long, upright growing branches. Branches have strong thorns, making the plant look like growing in a zigzag. The leaves are threepart (giving the plant its name) and differ completely from other citrus plants. The roots are robust and branch off well (whereas other citrus plants tend to grow long taproots). For this reason, the Trifoliate Orange is very suited for pots and also as a very hardy basis for graftings of other citrus species. The flowers have 4-5 cm in diameter, the five petals are clearly separated at the basis. Young fruits are characteristically pruinose. When ripe, the formerly green fruits change their colour to light- / dark yellow. The fruits contain little pulp and many seeds, so that they are only of little value for use. However, they are a nice decoration for your garden. When planted in the garden, Trifoliate Orange can resist temperatures down to approximately -20 °C, depending on the site, the age and constutution of the plant. The experience with its hardiness therefore differ between app. -15 °C and -25 °C. Trifoliate Oranges in a pot however need a place with temperatures around zero in winter. For exemplars planted in the garden it is advicable to shade the branches with fir-tree green, jute sheets or bass. This shading is not ment for warming the plant but for protecting it from heavy differences in temperature by the winter sun that might cause fissures in the bark.

Qualität: the only citrus species suitable for growing permanently in the garden (incl. the variety ‘flying Dragon’); bizarre habit; large flowers; pruinose & decorative fruits
